Here's a slightly edited version of what I emailed :)

-------------

Hey,

I just read you were closing Free Rainbow Tables down (someone on Hacker News linked me to it - I haven't checked the site in some time).

Have you found anyone to take over the running of the project yet?

If not I am tentatively interested - your site helped me a lot last year and I always thought it was a really handy looking project. It would be a shame to see it close.

Some background:

I'm UK based and have a degree in Embedded Systems Engineering. All my programming is self taught. Distributed computer has always interested me - I first got interested after being shown the Folding@Home project by some friends on a forum. I donated a fair amount of time to that project whilst at university and as my final year thesis worked on a distributed Math processing engine (for phyiscs modelling mainly). It never really worked (we only had 3 months :)) but it was an interesting insight. During the last 3 years I have written several times for a UK computer magazine on the subject of distributed computing efforts (even mentioning FRT's on one occasion). In terms of personal credentials I am a respected moderator on the EventScripts forums - which is a game scripting engine for Source game servers - where you will be able to find several people willing to give you a "reference".

Currently Im working as a security consultant and forensic computer analyst - part of that has involved rainbow tables. [some of this redacted because it discusses a tiny bit of our company specialism]

I have no experience with BOINC but am a fast learner - so dont see that presenting a problem :)

Just to clarify - despite all my professional work on table generation I would be looking to take this on as a personal project. I definitely wouldn't be aiming to change anything dramatically! That's not to say I wouldnt hope to bring any experience / code into the project from my work. All my storage work, for example, is done on my companies "do your own work" time so it is mine to do what I like with :)

Financially speaking I am quite secure and fairly able to support a project (depending, obv, on quite what the cost amounts too).

------

I redacted some of the slighly more detailed stuff about the company I work for but otherwise that's me.

I think I've got a bit to bring into the project - I have been working, as a matter of fact, with some of the FRT client code for an internal project so am fairly familiar with it.

i think the three biggest problems are:

* hosting (storage & bandwidth)
* knowledge (the technical details about rainbow tables)
* time(!)

i think as for point 2 and 3 it would be very interesting to have more people involved then just 1 admin who can fix things.

my 2 cents :)

I saw your email and it sounds interesting.

Have some patience with me though. After the news was slashdotted, i got more than 70 emails from people that want's to know more about the bandwidth usage and even a few emails from some pretty major players that won't have problems hosting it - I never imagined the project was so popular.

If everything turns out well, the server can probably be hosted by a 3rd party (probably a university or a major company with no bandwidth issues), and i will try to create a team of people interested in continuing the project.

Sounds great :)

So long as things get to carry on any solution is good in my book!

Well you should put the bandwidth usage and server details on the webpage or here in the forum so you don't have to answer the same questions over and over.
I would think that most ppl would want to know if donations and ads cover the expenses of this project. Also what kind of specifications the server needs.
